A solid, reliable roof is vital to your home.  It is also a big investment.  The good news?  A well installed roof, using proven materials, can last for many years.

When it is time for a new roof, most homeowners will contact multiple companies for information, and quotes on their project.  What they can see is a major difference in price between contractors.  But why?

Did you know that in New York State, contractors are not required to obtain a license?  That means that basically anyone who can hold a hammer can claim to be a roofer and bid to install your roof.  Unless you know a lot about roofs yourself, you may not know if they are installing using quality materials, if they are installing the right way, if they will finish the project once started, or if they will be reachable after the fact in case of any issues.  Additionally, unless you specifically ask, you won’t know if they are properly insured—which means that if any injury occurs at your home, you may be liable.  So, in the short term, you may be paying less money to install, but you might be paying thousands of dollars later for a roof that may need extensive repairs, or even replacement.

So how can you be sure that the roofing contractor that you are selecting will not only do the job right, but will be available if there are any questions or problems in the future?  Do your research.  While the state does not require certification, find out if your roofing contractor has certifications and appropriate insurance.

A top certification in the roofing industry is GAF Master Elite®.  GAF is North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, and has been in business for over 130 years.

Master Elite® is awarded to only 2% of roofing contractors in the United States.  To obtain certification, roofers must be licensed, properly insured, have a proven reputation (top customer satisfaction ratings, BBB ratings, clean bank records, and references from distributors), and participate in ongoing professional training. Master Elite® roofers must also undergo random inspections of their work, and continuously requalify.  Selecting a Master Elite® roofer ensures that you are selecting a roofer with experience in the industry who is able to install a quality product the right way.

Additionally, Master Elite® roofers are the only roofers who are able to offer customers GAF’s Golden Pledge Warranty.  This best in class warranty covers a roof for 100% of all manufacturer’s defects for the life of the shingle, 25 years for any workmanship defects, and allows for a one-time transfer of the warranty.  And the warranty is held by GAF.  Meaning that if your roofer leaves the area, or goes out of business, it doesn’t impact the warranty in any way.  GAF will ensure that a certified roofer will complete any repairs or replacements covered by the warranty—offering customers complete peace of mind.

So, when you are getting multiple quotes for a project, keep all of this in mind and ensure that you are comparing apples to apples.  Are the materials comparable?  Is there a warranty?  What do previous customers say about the company?  Are the appropriate insured?  Can you find information about them when you do research? Are they following all proper codes and regulations?  Just because a quote is the least expensive does not mean that it is going to be right for your home.

Ask yourself, if the prices were equal who would I choose?  What company showed you the most knowledge and professionalism?  Think of the representative as a clear representation of the company that you will be working with—including the roofing crew.  Are you comfortable with them working on your home?
