Is it time for a new roof? Did you know that you have several options when it comes to asphalt shingles?
3-tab shingles are single layer. They are “notched” to create three tabs.
3-tab shingles are lightweight, have a simple composition, and are fairly uniform in appearance. This makes them the least expensive of all shingle options. It is important to note, however, that since 3-tab shingles are lightweight, it makes them vulnerable to weather as they age—especially gusty wind. They also have fewer style and color options, and are the less aesthetically appealing than their counterparts.
While 3-tab shingles were once popular, in the 70s and 80s strides were made in the development and manufacturing of shingles. These created longer-lasting and more aesthetically appealing shingles that appealed to home owners. Because of this, the popularity of 3-tab shingles has sharply declined.
Architectural shingles have a heavy base mat that multiple layers are adhered to. This layered construction adds texture to the roof.
Architectural shingles are significantly heavier than 3-tab, without requiring additional support under the roof. The shingles are much sturdier, and are less likely to warp or succumb to wind damage. This allows architectural shingles to be backed by a much longer warranty (sometimes as long as 50 years). Additionally, they come in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and styles allowing you to better match the aesthetic of your home. Beyond just curb appeal, these shingles can increase the value of your home.
Designer shingles are similar to architectural shingles in design, but have the most options in terms of dimension, and color variation and blend—they can also be thicker. Certain types can even mimic the look of slate, cedar, etc.
Designer shingles allow you to truly customize the look of your roof, and to increase the value of your home.
