Like it or not, winter is just around the corner. But what does this mean for your exterior home improvement projects? Do they have to wait until spring? Probably not!

Winter is often a great time to book your project. You may be eligible for deals and discounts that are not available during the warmer months, and work is often more convenient in the winter since you will not be spending as much time outside of the house. So, what projects can (and can’t) be done in the winter, and what are the considerations?:

  1. Roofing: YES!
    • Has to be completed on days with no precipitation.
    • The actual project can take more time.
      • Our crew will need to clear any existing snow and ice.
      • Tools can work differently in the cold–we will need to make adjustments as we go
      • We may not be able to work consecutive days due to inclement weather–if we have to take a day off, we will make sure that your roof is properly covered to avoid any damage.
    • Asphalt shingles can become brittle in the cold.  We work to ensure that they are properly stored, and that we carefully apply to avoid any damage.  We also take extra time to avoid moisture, and ensure that the shingles stick properly.
    • Metal roofs are easily installed in the winter.
    • Fewer precautions need to be taken to protect the landscape.
  2. Siding: YES!
    • Material can crack when cut if it is too cold.  We take precautions to ensure that this is not a problem.
    • We will make sure to leave enough room for the siding to expand during the warmer months.
    • The actual project can take more time.
      • Our crew will need to clear any existing ice and snow that might interfere with the installation.
      • We typically install in sections to avoid cold air entering the house.
  3. Gutters: YES!
    • The actual project can take more time.
    • Our crew will need to ensure access to the gutters.
    • We will make sure to leave enough room for the gutters to expand during the warmer months.
  4. Windows: YES!
    • The biggest consideration is your home being cold when windows are removed.  We minimize this by removing one window at a time.
    • Materials do not expand or contract, so there is no need for special installation.
  5. Driveways: NO!
    • In order for us to properly level and install your driveway, we have to work in warmer temperatures, and definitely no less than 50°.
  6. Awnings, Decks, and Sunrooms: Maybe.
    • Much of this depends on exactly what you are looking to do.  Contact us to talk through your particular project.
