Last Fall,  Allstate Roofing & More, LLC Account Manager Joe Occhipinti went to an appointment for a roof estimate.  He had no idea that this would be much more than a typical visit.

David Boyce had a leaky roof, missing shingles, and soft and soggy plywood.  Joe toured the property, and then sat down with David for a cup of coffee.  When he mentioned David’s crutches and asked about his injury, he found out that David is a two-time survivor of bone cancer, who is uncertain of his future prognosis. His wish was for his wife to have a worry-free roof over her head but he didn’t know how it could happen. David had already talked to his insurance company and what they were able to offer him only covered a fraction of the cost to replace the roof.

Touched by David’s story, Joe first sent over one of the crew to temporarily caulk the leaky portion of the roof, free of charge, to prevent any further damage.  He then began working with the insurance company.  Unfortunately, they wouldn’t budge.   In the meantime, Joe found out that David had been diagnosed with diabetes, and had his car break down.  There was no way that he could pay for a new roof.

Determined to help David, Joe approached Walter Shkavritko, the Owner of Allstate Roofing & More, LLC.  Walter remembers, “(Joe) came to my office and presented (David’s) story to me and asked me if there was anything that we could do to help this customer out.  The story touched me and I said ‘Joe, let’s get it done’”.  At that point, Walter and Joe reached out to Ralph Finizio, the GAF Territory Representative.  GAF is North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, and a main partner and supplier.  He jumped at the chance to help and donated most of the materials and a lifetime warranty on the roof.  Ralph says, “..a leaky roof is tough for anybody and especially in this situation, it just made sense to be involved.  It’s a fantastic story and I’m glad to be a part of it”.

With the whole team on board, Joe was finally able to call David to tell him the good news—that the roof would be completed for only the money given by the insurance company, David would not have to pay a penny out of pocket! David recalls, “I started crying, and when I told my wife about it she started crying”.

The roof was completed in one day, and with the lifetime GAF warranty, David and his wife will never have to worry about a roof again.  David could not be more thrilled “I want to personally thank Allstate Roofing for what they’re doing, what they’ve done, and the owner Walter, it’s fantastic…you guys are amazing!”.

But Allstate Roofing and More, LLC and GAF wanted to do more, and presented David with a $1000 check to help with his medical expenses.

As Walter says, “It’s really important for us to help each other in need, and if we can do something, we do it.”
